RUSSELL ATWATER the third son of the Hon Russell and Clarissa Chapman Atwater of Blandford Massachusetts and a grandson of Major Reuben and Mary Russell Atwater of Cheshire Connecticut was born in Blandford on January 8 1795. He was a first cousin of Augustus Russell Street Yale 1812 and was prepared for College at the Cheshire Academy by the Rev Dr Tillotson Bronson Yale 1786 . His father removed about 1805 to a tract of new land in St Lawrence County New York where a town named Russell in his honor was formed in 1807. RUSSELL ATTWATER was born June 20, 1762 at Cheshire Ct and was a son of Reuben Attwater of English descent and one of the committee of safety in New Haven county during the revolution. Mr Attwater engaged in mercantile pursuits at Blanford, Mass in early life and while on business in New York in 1798 he was induced by McCormirk with whom he had dealings to purchase parts of the present towns of Russell, Pierrepont, Hopkinton &c and to become an agent for McCormick Harrison and others. An account of his labors bus been given in our history of Russell, Norfolk and Brasher. In 1808 he was appointed an Associate judge and held the office many years In the opening of the St Lawrence turnpike and the roads towards Lake George and Albany he had the principal direction and his energies were for many years devoted to the promotion of the various internal improvements of the country. In 1814 he was elected a senator and in 1816 a presidential elector and voted for Clinton. He died at the resilience of his son Phinneas Attwater in Norfolk in June 1851.

Russell Atwater - listed as a Revolutionary War pension list living at home of his son Phineas in Norfolk, NY. (per Rootsweb: b 1762 Wallingford Ct, d 1851 in Russell NY m Clarissa Chapman.) There was a Atwater Family Cemetery behind the Atwater house on Maple St - moved to Bixby cemetery in 1886 - Norfolk NY. Bixby Cem Rd 38, Plumbrook Rd - Cemetery Inventory no on-line so I can't check to see if he is there.)

Note to those of you who are searching through Russell, NY history to find genealogy roots. Many of the settlers from Russell came from Stephentown NY, Russell Ma, Blandford Ma and surrounding towns so you may want to search there. Also check the 1810, 1820 census. The Russell 1830 Census is incorrectly marked as Morristown.
